| Born
in Elmhurst Illinois, and a graduate of Iowa State University in 1972,
artist Penny Cerling has bee a staple in the Houston arts scene for over
25 years mounting solo efforts at McMurtrey Gallery, Hooks-Epstein, and
the Transco Tower. In the collection of Houston's Museum of fine Arts,
Cerling has held the position of master printer at David Folkman's Little
Egypt collaboration studio and taught design at the University of St. Thomas.
Her paintings, prints, and drawings have been also been widely collected
and shown over the years in a variety of public and private venues.
In
the 1990's the Cerling Etching Studio and then the Tembo-Cerling collaboration
studio produced works for many of Houston's most renowned artists, Earl
Staley, Sharon Kopriva, Mel Chin, Bert Long and a host of other top talents
in the Texas art scene.
In
this most recent effort Cerling brings her audience in close for a personal,
intimate, and expanded view of the poetry of line she painstakingly reinterprets
from nature. Known for her artful hand, Cerling carefully orchestrates
her compositions, deconstructing the world around us just enough to leave
us with the essence of edges that define our perception.
