Kelly Moran Blood Ties 24in x 36in Collage Linocut y.2011

Artist Statement:

My present work is a combination of inkjet, collage and linocut prints. I carve an image into a linoleum plate and print it over an inkjet collage or on top of a traditional paper glued to paper collage. I use  found and altered vintage, cartoon-like images, mostly of male and female figures from  the 40’s and 50’s, for the lino cuts. The themes in this work are about archetypal roles men and women play in society.  American optimism shines through because I have been using images from vintage sources such as ads for sugar, guns and mosquito repellant. I try to counter act images that are too sweet or too positive by placing something negative or unexpected with them. In my piece, “Spare me”, for example, the happy bowler has an atom bomb as her face.
